The Subtle Secrets That Stores Use To Keep You Shopping

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- There are less than two weeks left until Christmas and stores want your cash.

With shopping days slipping away stores are using their best techniques to lure customers inside, CBS 2's Jennifer McLogan reported.

The shop 'til you drop spirit was alive and well in Island Park where shopper Mary Hayes-Quinn shared her shopping strategy.

"I like to browse and then go in for the kill. I equate it to hunting or fishing," she said.

Stores have a strategy of their own that is designed to lure you in and keep you buying.

"You come into the store based off the feel and emotion of the store and I think music conveys that," Jeffrey Debrosse said.

Music makes magic, according to the Wall Street Journal and stores like The Gap and Macy's pump holiday playlists that are aimed at their core customers.

Stores also do their best to put customers at ease during the shopping experience.

"Friendly clerk, not too pushy, and informative too. We need to know what's on sale," Jermaine Riddick said.

Adults shopping with children may spend as much as 29 percent more.

"Knowing Christmas is coming I try not to spoil him too much. He would like to get a lot of stuff," Daniel Benjamin said.

Experts said that fragrance and product placement can also make a difference.

"The decorations are very important. The music is very important. Good retail stores today don't focus on the sale, they focus on the experience," Adelphi University School of Business professor Thomas Shinick explained.

Studies have shown that heat can also spark an increase in spending.
