New York City On Track For Record Low Number Of Murders, Shootings In 2013

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - As the year comes to a close, murders in New York City are poised to have taken a roughly 20 percent drop from 2012.

According to officials, there have been 329 murders through Dec. 22, compared with 413 in 2012, a 20.3 percent decrease.

If the trend holds, 2013 would have the lowest number of murders and shootings since records were kept, officials say.

Of the 329 murders, 191 were committed with guns. That's a decrease of roughly 19 percent from the previous year.

Overall, there have been 272 fewer shootings than through this time last year, officials say. There have been 1,077 shootings through Dec. 22, compared to 1,349 at the same time in 2012.
