PATERSON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A 21-year-old man was left in critical condition Saturday morning, after police said he was shot multiple times while sitting in his car outside a restaurant in Paterson, N.J.

The shooting happened just after 5 a.m. Saturday outside the Al Safa Restaurant, at 900 Main St. in Paterson.

Police said the victim had just entered his car when the shooter walked up to the driver’s side and shot him several times in the upper torso.

The victim tried to drive himself to the hospital, but pulled over a short time later. A friend who was following behind him then drove the victim to the hospital.

The victim’s name has not been released, and a motive for the shooting remained under investigation late Saturday morning.

No other injuries were reported.
