Report: Jets' Winslow Charged With Synthetic Marijuana Possession

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The troubles continue for Kellen Winslow Jr.

The Jets' tight end was allegedly found in possession of synthetic marijuana by East Hanover, N.J. police back on Nov. 19, but was not charged until Dec. 30, the Morristown Daily Record first reported. He did not appear in court until Wednesday.

"We are aware of situation. This a pending legal matter and we will have no further comment," the Jets said in a statement Thursday.

According to the newspaper, Winslow is specifically charged for possession of a controlled dangerous substance, a third-degree offense that could result in a maximum punishment of five years in prison.

Winslow, who finished with 31 receptions for 388 yards and two touchdowns this season, was suspended four games earlier in the season for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs. He later said he thought his positive test might be attributed to allergy medication. His arrest for synthetic marijuana happened eight days after returning from his league suspension.

Winslow, a nine-year veteran with 469 career receptions, will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
