Search On For Alleged Police Impersonator Who Struck Near NYU

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police on Tuesday were asking the public to help them find a suspect who allegedly impersonated a police officer and stole money from a man at a vegetarian restaurant near NYU.

Around 8:15 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, the suspect walked up to a 19-year-old male victim and another man as they were sitting in the Maoz Vegetarian Restaurant, at 59 E. 8th St., police said.

He said he was an undercover police officer and asked to see the victim's identification and wallet, police said.

The man gave the suspect money from his wallet, police said. The suspect returned some of the money and took the rest before fleeing on foot.

Police have released a surveillance photo of a person wanted in the case.

Anyone with information was asked to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS, log onto the Crime Stoppers website, or text tips to 274637 (CRIMES) and enter TIP577.
