Red, White And Doh! USA Opening Ceremony Outfits Cause A Fuss

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It's quite possible not even Clark Griswold would be caught dead wearing one of these things.

Yet, U.S. Olympians will march into the Sochi Winter Games in a few weeks adorned head to toe in something that cannot be called unpatriotic but is already being labeled as a fashion faux pas on a global scale.

The Ralph Lauren-designed outfit was manufactured completely in the United States, which is a step up from 2012 when the outfits designed for American athletes at the London Games were manufactured mostly in China.

The corporation sourced more than 40 domestic partners to help create the look, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"It is a privilege to be part of dressing Team USA during the Sochi Games," said David Lauren, the executive vice president of advertising, marketing and corporate communications. "It's a proud moment to watch these premier athletes as they walk out representing our nation on a global stage in front of billions of people worldwide."

But that's not providing any kind of solace to those who are offended by the get-ups. To read some tweets, it's as if Team USA should have just went for it and donned the red, white and blue bunny suits with the feet instead.

What's more, the sweaters cost $598. Only in America.

The Winter Olympics will be held from Feb. 6-23 in the sea-side Russian resort town.
