HACKENSACK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A Bergen County man pleaded not guilty Friday to charges that he fatally shot his grandmother in her sleep late last year.

Joseph Bariso, 28, is charged with murder for allegedly shooting 85-year-old Olga Bariso while she slept on the couch of her Lodi home back on Dec. 29.

According to prosecutors, Bariso, who lived in the basement apartment of the Union Street home, fled with a handgun taken from the home.

Bariso was arrested in Rutherford and initially charged with attempted murder.

The charges were upgraded after Olga died on Jan. 11.

Bariso is being held on $2 million bail.
