NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Pope Francis may make a U.S. visit, according to a seasoned Vatican watcher.

"On background, Vatican officials are saying that Pope Francis has indicated that he wants to come to the United States in September 2015," John Allen told WCBS 880's Rich Lamb.

Allen, a correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter, said the pope would attend the World Meeting of Families which will be held in Philadelphia.

"There has also been some conversation about the fact that because the General Assembly of the United Nations generally is in session in September that if Francis does indeed go to Philly, that that might be combined with a stop in New York for the pope to address the United Nations," Allen said.

He added a papal visit to the U.S. looks "very good."
