Report: Jets Interested In Receivers Jeremy Maclin, Emmanuel Sanders
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Jets need to provide Geno Smith -- or whoever plays quarterback for Gang Green -- with some weapons for the 2014 season.
In 2013, New York finished 31st in the NFL in passing yards, 29th in points and 25th in total yards.
So how does general manager John Idzik plan to improve his team's passing attack?
According to the New York Daily News, the Jets are interested in potential free-agent wide receivers Jeremy Maclin and Emmanuel Sanders.
Free agency begins on March 11, and Eric Decker is widely regarded as being the top receiver set to hit the market. But Decker projects to cost a lot, so Maclin and Sanders figure to be more realistic targets.
"For a team that wants to give me a one-year deal, that's cool," Maclin told Comcast Philadelphia in January. "I'll just go out there and ball out, do the things I think I can do. Hopefully get that type of deal I'm looking for (after 2014). If a team wants to give me a long-term deal, I'll go out there and still do the same thing."
The Jets' top four receivers last season were Santonio Holmes, Jeremy Kerley, David Nelson and Stephen Hill. That quartet wasn't exactly explosive, combining for just 1,744 yards on 126 catches.
Holmes is expected to be cut, and Idzik has a good amount of cap space to improve the roster.
Maclin, 25, has played for the Eagles since debuting in the league in 2009. He didn't play at all in 2013 after tearing his ACL during training camp. In 59 games over four seasons, the 6-foot-0, 198-pounder has 258 career receptions for 3,453 yards and 26 touchdowns.
Sanders, 26, has played with the Steelers since 2010. In 16 games last season, the 5-foot-11, 180-pounder caught 67 passes for 740 yards and six touchdowns.
With the start of the free-agency period still over a month away, it remains a possibility that one of, if not both, receivers won't end up hitting the open market.
