Staten Island Woman Furious After Postal Service Loses Track Of Her Father' Ashes

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Staten Island woman was waiting Friday evening for a very meaningful package that appeared to have been lost in the mail.

As CBS 2's Scott Rapoport reported, Lorraine Trivone, 54, had a special loving bond with her father, Nicholas – a bond he treasured until the day he died nearly two weeks ago.

"Like your heart breaking," she said. "If you can imagine your heart breaking, that what it feels like."

Trivone thought it was it was the worst day of her life. But she said she never, ever imagined what was to come.

After her father's death in Florida, he was cremated, and his ashes were sent priority express from the U.S. Postal Service to Trivone's home on Staten Island. But they never got there – and it gets worse.

"They don't know where my father's human remains are," Trivone said. "They don't know what happened to the package."

Trivone said her father's remains have been lost, and the Postal Service has no idea where they are.

She said she has spent hours on the phone, while at work, trying to get answers from the Postal Service.

"It may get to Staten Island. It may not. It may be on a cargo carrier," Trivone said. "They don't know."

Trivone said according to the U.S. Postal Service's own tracking, the human remains were last handled in Miami at 6:48 p.m. Wednesday, and have not been in the system since.

The crematorium that sent the ashes told CBS 2 they actually sent out three sets of human remains to the Postal Service that day, and that all three were likewise nowhere in the system to be found.

"Where is he?" Trivone said. "You know, live your whole life, and then you're lost in the Postal Service."

The Postal Service said severe weather may have delayed the package, and officials are optimistic that it will be back on track and arrive at its destination soon.
