As CBS 2’s Joe Biermann reported, reports of a possible explosion at Peninsula Hospital in the Edgemere section of the Rockaways came in around 4:47 p.m.
The hospital, which is located at Beach Channel Drive & Beach 53rd Street, is closed.
Firefighters knocked down most of the flames quickly but smoke could still be seen coming from the back of the building.
It is believe the fire may have started in the back of the building, possibly near the boiler room, Biermann reported.
There were no injuries reported as a result of the fire.
