Devils Trade Loktionov, Conditional 3rd-Round Pick To 'Canes For Ruutu

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — The New Jersey Devils have acquired left wing Tuomo Ruutu from the Carolina Hurricanes for center Andrei Loktionov and a conditional third-round pick in 2017.

The teams announced the deal on Wednesday, an hour before the NHL trading deadline expired.

Ruutu had five goals and 11 assists in 57 games this season. The 31-year-old was also a team-worst minus 19. The native of Finland has 138 goals and 186 assists in 606 career games over 10 seasons with Chicago and Carolina.

"He brings a certain dimension that I think we have, but not enough of. He brings a grit, he brings a competitiveness and also he brings an experience of playing in big games and knowing how to compete," Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said of Ruutu. "He's a player you want on your side. I know he was an antagonistic player against us over the years. He does the things we like to see. He gets right in your face."

Loktionov had four goals and eight assists in 48 games. He was acquired from Los Angeles in 2012.

Ruutu has two years and $10 million remaining on his contract.
