Mariners Scout Reportedly On Hand For Phelps' Shaky Start
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The New York Yankees have a crowded competition for the fifth spot in their starting rotation.
The Seattle Mariners are breaking out the duct tape, patching things together until injured starters Hisashi Iwakuma and Taijuan Walker are ready to return.
So are the stars aligned for a deal?
Yankees starter David Phelps could be one option for the M's as the team sent a scout to watch his outing Tuesday night, according to the New York Post. The 27-year-old got knocked around a bit but managed to limit the damage, giving up one run and five hits in 2 2/3 innings against the Baltimore Orioles.
"They got some hits, but I feel like I was able to bear down those first two innings and pitch out of some spots, which is huge," Phelps said after the 3-2 loss. "If there's ever a time to work on something like that, spring training is a great time."
Phelps, Michael Pineda, Adam Warren and Vidal Nuno are vying for the final spot in a Yankees rotation that includes CC Sabathia, Hiroki Kuroda, Masahiro Tanaka and Ivan Nova.
Phelps went 6-5 with a 4.98 ERA in 22 appearances (12 starts) last season.
Meanwhile, the Yankees are still looking for infielders, the Post reported. The team has been linked this offseason to Seattle's Nick Franklin.
The Chicago White Sox and Milwaukee Brewers also had scouts in attendance Tuesday, though they were likely keeping tabs on the Yankees' catchers, according to the Post.
