Suffolk County 911 Operator Helps Mom Deliver Twin Boys

STONY BROOK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - A Suffolk County 911 operator assisted in a special delivery - times two - this week.

As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, a 48-year-old Stony Brook woman called 911 from her home on Tuesday and told the dispatcher she was about to give birth.

"She said she could feel the head coming out. So I told her with her next contraction that she's going to have to push. So I asked her to lay down on the ground. With that next contraction, the baby came out," 911 dispatcher Christine Springer told Hall. "I asked...what the baby was and she said it was a boy. Then she stated that she was pregnant with twins."

Springer said the new mom stayed calm in an otherwise stressful situation.

"While we were caring for the first baby, she continued to have contractions. At that point, the ambulance crew had arrived, so they were able to deliver the second baby," she told Hall.

Springer said the best part was hearing the baby crying. This was the second time she helped a woman give birth over the phone.

The twin boys were premature. The newborns and new mom were all taken to the hospital.
