The boy was playing with the gun when a female friend of the family told the boy, "stop, don't play with that," sources said.

The boy, 12, reportedly said not to worry and then the gun, a Colt .22 caliber revolver, went off, sources said.

The boy said he did not know the gun was loaded and told police he got the gun from a friend, sources said.

Police are looking for the proper owner of the gun, according to sources.

The girl was rushed to Jamaica Hospital where she is listed in stable condition and is expected to survive, 1010 WINS Mona Rivera reported.

The boy was questioned and led out of the 103rd Precinct in handcuffs, CBS 2's Sonia Rincon reported.

He was charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon, sources told CBS 2.

He is due in family court Friday.
