Jersey Girls Fire Back At 'Offensive' Ad, Say The Garden State Isn't An Armpit

CRANFORD, N.J.(CBSNewYork) -- Frustrated that New Jersey was about to be called the "Armpit of America" in a national ad campaign a group of women took it upon themselves to create a new image for the Garden State.

Jersey girls Jennifer LoBianco and Melissa Tropeano-LaTour are tired of their home state being the butt of too many jokes, including a recent soap ad planned by Dove that referred to New Jersey as the "Armpit of America."

"I was offended by the ad and the jokes about Jersey women and the state," Jennifer LoBianco said.

"We're strong women, that's why we can take your jokes but at the same time we just felt like enough is enough," Tropeano-LaTour added.

The women rallied friends and colleagues to create a YouTube video aimed at showing the world what Jersey women are made of. It's title 'We Are New Jersey.'

Yoga instructor Lockey Maisonneuve bent over backwards in the video for the chance to highlight the strength of her fellow females.

"Jersey girls don't pump gas, are very tough, and we remember everything," she said.

Entrepreneur, Clara Nunziato was featured in the video. She called the ad insulting.

"I'm glad it was a really short lived idea," she said.

The women want to be seen for who they really are, not a punch line. They hope that this video is just the beginning of showcasing all that New Jersey has to offer. They would like to start a web series focused on empowered women and business in the state.
