NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The Jets haven’t been very active in free agency thus far this offseason.
Though it’s still early in the process, the vast majority of impact players are already off the board.
But Gang Green has holes to fill, and general manager John Idzik still has plenty of cap space to play with. What will his next move be?
According to NJ.com, quarterback Michael Vick is planning to visit the Jets this weekend.
This could get interesting.
The four-time Pro Bowler, who spent the past five seasons with the Eagles, only played in seven games in an injury-plagued 2013. The 33-year-old, thought to be the top free-agent QB on the market, completed 54.6 percent of his passes last season for 1,215 yards and five touchdowns. He was turnover-prone, however, throwing three interceptions and fumbling four times.
A dynamic runner, the veteran signal-caller ran for 306 yards and scored two touchdowns on the ground.
Vick is looking to start, according to the website, but he’ll likely have to compete with second-year player Geno Smith if he joins the Jets.
Smith had an up-and-down freshman campaign, but he showed plenty of promise down the stretch. The 23-year-old played in all 16 games for New York in 2013, completing 55.8 percent of his passes for 3,046 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also rushed for six scores. But like Vick, Smith didn’t take very good care of the football. He threw an alarming 21 interceptions to go along with seven fumbles.
Despite age, injury and accuracy issues, Michael Vick is the free-agent QB that always made the most sense for NYJ.—

The current quarterbacks on the Jets’ roster include Smith, Matt Simms and Mark Sanchez. Sanchez is expected to be cut, and David Garrard is an unrestricted free agent.
The Jets reportedly had interest in Josh McCown, but he signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Other free-agent quarterbacks of note include Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Flynn, Josh Freeman and Kevin Kolb.
