Quick Thinking Store Workers Escape 3-Alarm Bronx Blaze

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Three firefighters suffered minor injuries battling a Bronx blaze, on Sunday.

Further injuries were avoided thanks to quick thinking store workers who made it to safety before the fire tore through a pair of stores and damaged two others.

The fire broke out in Fino Men's Shoes and Fine Wear, and 99 Cent Dreams on East Burnside Ave around 10:35 a.m., the New York Post reported.

By 11:10 a.m. firefighters were fighting a 3 alarm blaze, by 6 p.m. the fire had been brought under control.

The owner of a nearby butcher shop told 1010 WINS' Roger Stern that he ushered his employees out of the building as soon as he saw smoke.

"I saw a lot of smoke and then I told all of my employees to come out," Jose Pasqual said.

Part of the roof collapsed in two of the buildings making it harder for the FDNY to fight the fire.

"The structure at this time is unsafe so we had to quickly move to outside, exterior operation," FDNY spokesman Khalik Bailey said.

No serious injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
