Report: Jets' Decker To Fork Over $25,000 To Cumberland For No. 87

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Jeff Cumberland drives a hard bargain. But then again, Eric Decker can certainly afford it.

The Jets' tight end will soon be $25,000 richer after agreeing No. 87 to Decker, the team's newest weapon on offense, the Daily News reported Tuesday.

"I reached out to Jeff and asked him how dedicated he was to the number," Decker told reporters a couple weeks ago. "We're going to negotiate what we're going to do with the number…. Obviously, he's been there for his four year-tenure. That's something that is up in the air. Maybe we can negotiate. Otherwise I'll have to find a new home and a new number."

It turns out Decker threw in a steak dinner to sweeten the pot in his quest to get 87, which he wore during all four of his seasons with the Denver Broncos. And if it's karma or superstition he's worried about, Decker did catch 222 passes for a little more than 3,000 yards and 33 touchdowns during that stretch, including 172 grabs and 24 TDs over the last two seasons.

Decker signed a five-year $36.25 million contract with the Jets on the second day of free agency.

Cumberland, who signed a three-year, $5.7 million deal back in early March, will switch to No. 85, the team announced.
