NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A prisoner escaped custody Monday evening in Brooklyn.

The suspect — Darnell Thomas, 26 — escaped from custody shortly after 6:30 p.m. at Atlantic and South Portland avenues, near the Barclays Center, in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, police said.

He was being taken to Central Booking at the time.

Thomas was in handcuffs when he escaped, police said. It was not clear how Thomas escaped from the police cruiser in which he was being transported.

As CBS 2’s Don Champion reported, police ever since the escape have been scouring the area both on foot and in squad cars looking for Thomas.

As of 11:45 p.m., there had been no sign of him.

Thomas is 5 feet 8 inches tall, and was last seen wearing a white shirt, a jacket with gold zippers, and two gold earrings in each ear, police said.

Thomas was being taken to Central Booking when he escaped. He had been arrested on a charge of criminal mischief, police said.
