Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina Marks First 100 Days

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Carmen Farina celebrated her first 100 days as schools chancellor on Saturday.

Farina marked the occasion with an appearance at Teachers College, Columbia University.

She said her primary objective will be to elevate the status of teachers.

"It takes only one day of someone who's not a professional to spend in a classroom to understand that this is not easy work," Farina  said. "I tell people who have very fancy jobs that I would like them to exchange one day to be in a classroom and I guarantee you'll have a very different vision of what life is like."

Farina also voiced her support for universal pre-kindergarten, saying it's much more than day care.
