L.I. Girl Scouts Sending Cookies To Troops Overseas

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Some local children are sending a special thank you to our military serving overseas.

The Girl Scouts of Nassau County are teaming up with DHL Express for the 9th Annual Operation Cookie.

They are preparing to send more than 60,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to U.S. Military personnel serving around the world in places like Bahrain and Afghanistan, CBS 2's Scott Rapoport reported.

The Girl Scouts have been going door to door for the last three months offering community members the chance to purchase cookies to be donated to our troops.

The girls said they hope the cookies will make our troops smile and feel loved.

"I just really like to do this for them because it shows that we can pay them back for all they do for us because they do so much," said Girl Scout Katelyn Stealey.

"They're over there fighting for us so it's nice to be able to give a piece of home to them," said Girl Scout Kaitlyn Genari.

Community members said the lessons the girls learn from the project will last a lifetime.

"I think the lesson is that there's always a world out there that needs help and that we can make a difference," said Donna Ceravolo, executive director of the Girl Scouts Of Nassau County.

DHL Express is donating its shipping services and said troops in Afghanistan will have their cookies by Saturday.

"It means a lot," said Sgt. First Class Percival Luke. "It's just like getting a care package to show that people care about you."
