Report: Steve Kerr Has Concerns About Knicks' Coaching Job

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The New York Knicks hiring Steve Kerr might not be such a slam dunk after all.

That's because Kerr has concerns about coaching at MSG, where so many respected coaches have been chewed up and spit out over the past decade under owner James Dolan, according to the New York Daily News.

"Steve will not jump into this without knowing exactly what he is getting himself into," a source told the Daily News.

The source added that Kerr will "do his research" and "talk to the right people," and said the Turner Sports analyst has been asking confidants, "Why do some people think I'd be crazy to do this?"

The Knicks fired their entire coaching staff on Monday, including head coach Mike Woodson, who went 109-79 in his two-plus seasons with the team.

Last week, the New York Post reported that Kerr, who won three NBA titles playing under Knicks president Phil Jackson, "absolutely expects" and would "definitely" accept an offer to be the team's new head coach. He has been rumored to be the front-runner due to his familiarity with Jackson's famous triangle offense.

SCHMEELK: KERR IS CREAM OF WEAK CROP

Kerr called coaching "a brutal profession" during his SiriusXM NBA Radio show on Monday.

"Coaches basically know when they go in that they are likely to be fired," he said. "I think back to a year ago when the Knicks were one of the best stories in the league, they won 54 games, I thought Mike Woodson was one of the top coaches in the league. He did a fantastic job. And then everything fell apart this year for a number of reasons."

Kerr, who served as general manager of the Phoenix Suns from 2007-10, acknowledged he anticipated "at least being part of the conversation" for the Knicks job.

"This is the way the NBA works, the coach is usually the first one to pay," Kerr said of Woodson on his radio show. "I feel bad for Mike, I think he's done an excellent job in New York, but between the struggles of the team this year and the new regime with Phil Jackson I think this was — and I don't think I'm the only one saying this — I think the writing was sort of on the wall the last couple of months.

"And now here we are."

Jackson is expected to meet the media on Wednesday.
