Paul Simon, Wife Edie Brickell Downplay Domestic Dispute In Court

NORWALK, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- Legendary Grammy award-winning singer Paul Simon and his wife, singer Edie Brickell, have found themselves in troubled water after being arrested in Connecticut over the weekend on disorderly conduct charges.

New Canaan police said they responded to the couple's home around 8:20 p.m. Saturday to investigate a "family dispute" after someone called 911 and hung up.

When officers arrived, they found minor injuries, police Chief Leon Krolikowski said. He did not say who was injured.

Krolikowski said the incident was minor, but that officers were required to make an arrest because it was considered domestic violence.

"Sufficient to require an arrest, but not significant enough to be called punching or anything like that," he told Jones.

Krolikowski said one of them also agreed to leave the home and go to another location.

Simon, 72, and Brickell, 47, held hands as they appeared in Norwalk Superior Court on Monday after being issued misdemeanor summons, WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau reported.

"We're fine," Simon told reporters, including CBS 2's John Slattery outside the courthouse. "We love each other. We're fine. We had an argument."

Allen Cramer, the couple's lawyer, said police have exaggerated the incident.

"It was nothing," Cramer told 1010 WINS' Al Jones. "It was the kind of thing that a husband and wife normally go through."

Cramer said Brickell's visiting mother dialed 911 as the argument escalated.

Simon and Brickell convinced Judge William Wenzel orders of protection are not necessary, saying their argument was atypical.

"Both of us are fine together," Simon tried to assure the judge. "We're going to go back home today. We're going to watch our son play baseball."

"I don't need to be protected," Brickell said. "I don't think he's a threat to me at all."

The two are due back in court May 16.

Simon is a 12-time Grammy winner and member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, both as a solo artist and as a member of Simon and Garfunkel.

Brickell is the lead singer of the band Edie Brickell & New Bohemians.

The two were married in 1992. They have three children together.
