EAST NORTHPORT, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver who they said struck a 20-year-old man who had been ejected from his sport utility vehicle in a crash on Long Island.
Police said Alexander Zydel, of East Northport, was driving on Soundview Avenue at around 12:55 a.m. when he crashed his Ford Explorer into a tree and was ejected from the vehicle.
A second vehicle, described as a light-colored sedan, then struck Zydel and fled the scene, Suffolk County Police Sgt. James Madden told WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall.
Zydel was transported to Huntington Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.
Madden said autopsy results may help them determine whether the car crash or the hit-and-run killed Zydel.
The investigation is continuing.
Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash or who may have been driving on Soundview Avenue at the time of the crash to contact the Vehicular Crime Unit at 631-852-6555 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
