Girl, 3, Critically Injured By Falling Bed In Newark

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A child was critically injured in Newark, N.J. Wednesday when a bed crashed down on top of her.

As CBS 2's Dick Brennan reported, authorities said the little girl and her siblings were unsupervised at the time.

The accident happened around 10:45 a.m. Wednesday in a public housing apartment at 56 block N. Munn Ave. in Newark, police said.

The bed fell on top of the 3-year-old girl inside the apartment, police said. When officers arrived, the girl was not responsive, police said.

The girl was taken to an area hospital, where she was reported in critical condition.

Police learned there were two other children between the ages of 1 and 2 years old. They had been left unattended by a babysitter for an undetermined period of time, police said.

Neighbors were sickened by what happened.

"This is just messed up – this really is," said Dolores Lucas. "I don't know – unfortunately, I don't know why somebody would leave the babies alone."

"I wouldn't even leave someone with my child alone – that would just hurt my heart. And then to see another child, that just hurts me – like, seriously, it does," a man added. "But I hope she comes through. I hope she comes through; feels better."

"That's sick, I mean – you don't leave kids alone like that," another man told 1010 WINS' Holli Haerr. "You know what I'm saying?"

Police would not say late Wednesday afternoon whether the babysitter was in custody.

Newark police Special Victims Detectives were investigating late Wednesday afternoon.
