Bail Raised For Babysitter Charged In Death Of Girl, 4, In Newark

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Bail was raised to $500,000 Friday for a babysitter charged in the death of a 4-year-old Newark girl who police said was crushed by a bed.

Sakita Covington, 38, was arraigned Friday in state Superior Court in Essex County, N.J. She had previously been held on $50,000 bail.

Covington was charged with four counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of aggravated assault.

Police were called to an apartment at the Bradley Court houses on North Munn Avenue around 10:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Police said a bed had fallen on top of the girl, identified as Naira Bennett, inside the apartment, CBS 2's Dick Brennan reported Wednesday.

When officers arrived, the girl was not responsive, police said. She was taken to University Hospital, where she died hours later.

Authorities said the little girl and "three other very young children" were unsupervised at the time of the incident. They had been left unattended by a babysitter for an undetermined period of time, police said.

The cause and manner of the Naira's death are pending an autopsy, and the investigation is ongoing.
