ADL: NYC Taxi Driver Caught Wearing Nazi Swastika Armband Suspended
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A taxi driver has been suspended for wearing a Nazi swastika armband while driving around New York City, according to the Anti-Defamation League.
The group said it urged the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission to investigate after receiving multiple complaints about the driver.
“People on the street saw the cab driver driving with the hate symbol and they took pictures with their phone and sent it in,” New York Regional Director Evan R. Bernstein told 1010 WINS. “We’re pleased that the public shows that New Yorkers are willing to speak out and they won’t tolerate these kinds of hate symbols.”
The TLC looked into the allegations and suspended the driver’s operator license for 30 days after he pleaded guilty to violating commission rules, according to the ADL.
“We applaud the TLC’s swift investigation and successful prosecution of this outrageous and inflammatory gesture by a taxicab driver,” Bernstein stated. “By openly displaying this hate symbol identified with Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party while operating a New York City taxicab, the driver sent a frightening and offensive message to New Yorkers about who might be welcome – and unwelcome – in the taxicab he was driving.”
“In disciplining the driver, the TLC sends a powerful message that such a vehement demonstration of hate is unacceptable, and that there are consequences for those who seek to intimidate others.”
The driver has not been identified.
