Fleet Week In Full Swing This Memorial Day Weekend
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Civilians and veterans headed to the West Side of Manhattan Saturday to take in the sights and sounds of Fleet Week New York.
As CBS 2’s Janelle Burrell reported, one of the highlights of Fleet Week is docked at Pier 92 along the West Side.
The majestic USS Oak Hill captivated kids and grownups alike.
“It’s so big and so many wires and everything,” said Commack resident Amanda Alvy.
“It’s really cool that they let the kids and everybody get on the equipment — the boats, tanks, transport ships, they let them touch the weapons,” said Tom Alvy.
The Alvy family made the trek from Long Island.
Crowds took advantage of the free tours, including one vessel which is used as a landing ship dock to transport Marines and equipment to shore.
But Fleet Week is also about getting a taste of what it takes to make it in the military.
Eleven-year-old Amy Pardo managed to squeeze out 20 push-ups.
“It was pretty hard,” she said.
A few piers down, over at the Intrepid, there was more hands on action with robots and aquatics.
For many of the visitors, the best part of all was the opportunity to “See the servicemen and thank them for their service to the country,” said Alvy.
