Dog Cares For Orphaned Kitten At NYC Shelter

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A dog at a New York City shelter has adopted a kitten.

The Maltese named Coco recently gave birth to a surprise litter of puppies, but quickly made room for an orphaned kitten named Roadhouse after it was brought to the Animal Haven pet shelter, at 251 Centre St. in SoHo.

The 3-week-old puppies and Roadhouse have since formed a beautiful bond, shelter workers said.

"It was literally as if we were just handing her another puppy, and Coco was happy to take her," Animal Haven associate director Kendra Mara told 1010 WINS' Al Jones. "This has never happened before."

Most of Coco's puppies are white, so the jet black kitten does stand out. But she is part of the family.

"And I think she just knew that Roadhouse was a baby and needed to be cared for, and she just took her in," Mara said.

Video posted on the shelter's Facebook page shows Roadhouse nursing alongside the pups.

The animals won't be available for adoption for another three weeks, the shelter said.
