DA: Queens Teacher Arrested For Alleged Affair With Second Teen Student

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Queens high school teacher charged with raping a student was arraigned Wednesday, accused of having a second affair with another student, authorities said.

Joy Morsi, 39, was rearrested Wednesday and charged with sexually abusing a second 16-year-old male student, prosecutors said. The alleged incident took place on school property on Saturday, authorities said.

As CBS 2's Elise Finch reported, the new charges came a day after Morsi was arraigned on 20 counts of rape, 20 counts of criminal sexual conduct and endangering the welfare of a child in a separate case involving a different 16-year-old male student.

In that case, Morsi, who teaches physical education at Grover Cleveland High School, was allegedly involved in "multiple incidents" with the student over a seven week period last year in various locations at the school, prosecutors said.

She also allegedly sent emails to the student asking if he was a virgin and allegedly sent raunchy photos.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said in Saturday's incident, Morsi "twice engaged in a criminal sexual act with a 16-year-old male student" inside the school.

New York's age of consent is 17.

"Schools should be safe haven's for kids, instead the defendant stands accused now of having used her position as a teacher to sexually prey upon two of her students," Brown said.

In Saturday's incident, prosecutors said Morsi was charged with two-counts of third-degree criminal sexual act and one count of endangering the welfare of a child.

"These are serious accusations in which a school teacher, who should serve as a role model to students, is instead accused of using her position to gain access to children for her own gratification," Brown said in a statement.

She was ordered held on $25,000 bail and is due back in court on June 23. The judge also ordered her to stay away from both of the teenagers.

Residents in Morsi's Massapequa, Long Island neighborhood declined to speak with CBS 2's Finch on camera, but one of her neighbors said she was shocked by the allegations because Morsi seemed like a nice, normal person.

"Yes it is shocking, because her position is a teacher, an adult," one woman said.

"I don't know, you just can't trust anybody anymore," another woman said.

"I just think it's disgusting," said another woman.

Morsi, who is married, has been a physical education teacher at Grover Cleveland High School since 1999. The Department of Education said she has been removed from the classroom.
