Police: Livery Cab Driver Killed In Midtown Accident

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The driver of an SUV livery cab was killed in Midtown Thursday after becoming pinned between his vehicle and another van.

The accident happened on Madison Avenue and East 49th Street just before 12 p.m.

Police told 1010 WINS the 58-year-old driver had left the 2011 Ford Expedition in reverse instead of park when he got out to help two customers.

As the SUV began to roll backward, the man tried to jump back in and put the car in park, leaving part of his body outside of the car. Before he could do so, the vehicle sideswiped an unoccupied, parked 2013 Ford Econoline.

The driver fell out of his SUV and sustained trauma to his body, police said.

Emergency responders rushed him to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Ford Expedition continued to roll through the intersection of East 49th Street before it came to a stop.

Police have not identified the victim, pending family notification.
