Police Rescue 2 Men After Kayak Overturns In Rockaway Inlet

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police rescued two fishermen from the Rockaway Inlet Monday afternoon, after their kayak flipped over.

The NYPD Harbor Patrol saw the men – ages 18 and 38 – in the water next to an overturned kayak in the inlet off Breezy Point around 1:40 p.m., police said.

The men had been fishing when one of them fell overboard, and the kayak went out of balance and flipped, police said.

The men both tried to turn the kayak right-side up, but their efforts did not work, police said.

While trying to right the kayak, the older man also got stuck in the arm with a fishhook, which he removed, police said.

The Harbor Patrol officers found the men after they had been in the water for about 15 minutes, police said. They were removed from the water along with the kayak.

Both men were treated for hypothermia as they were taken to a floating dock at Kingsborough Community College. Paramedics examined the men, but they required no further medical attention, police said.
