Mother Admits To Killing Newborn Whose Body Was Found In Recycling Center

NEW CITY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Rockland County woman admitted Monday to strangling her newborn son, whose body was found at a Westchester County recycling center last fall.

Maria Oliva Guaman-Guaman pleaded guilty in Rockland County Court, District Attorney Thomas Zugibe said.

She admitted that after killing her baby, she tossed his body into a recycling container outside a convenience store in the Village of Spring Valley.

The remains of the full-term baby boy were found on Nov. 12 of last year a black garbage bag at Brookfield Resource Management Inc. in Elmsford, police said.

Authorities found a lottery ticket in the bag with the baby's body and traced it back to a convenience store in Spring Valley. Police said the baby's body was dumped in a recycling bin behind the store.

Spring Valley police named the newborn "Baby Angel" and held a funeral for him last fall.

Psychiatric experts determined Guaman-Guaman suffered brain damage as a child. They concluded she has a low IQ and is emotionally disturbed.

The DA said Guaman-Guaman will be sentenced on Sept. 4 to 15 years in prison. She faces mandatory deportation to Ecuador after her sentence is completed.
