German Fans Celebrate Close Win Over Argentina In World Cup Title Game

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Germany beat Argentina to win the world Cup with a lone goal in extra time on Sunday.

As WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported, the mood at a German beer hall in Midtown was like Octoberfest in July.

The German faithful packed the hall to capacity, donning German soccer jerseys, flags, and painted faces.

"It was so great when he scored. It was such a nice goal. It was just beautiful, just a perfect day," a fan named Chris said.

He went on to proclaim the day, 'the best day in the history of German football.'

"Yeah in the end it's just football, but it's just we waited such a long time for this moment to happen. It means everything to me," he said.

Some 1,200 German fans were also gathered near the East River to watch the game on a big screen TV.

"I'm very excited that Germany won. I'm so excited," one woman told 1010 WINS Roger Stern.
