Poll: LeBron James Is America's Favorite Athlete; Jeter Is No. 3

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Who is America's favorite sports star?

Step aside, Michael.

According to a new Harris Poll, NBA superstar LeBron James -- now a member of the Cavaliers -- is the United States' favorite athlete.

Michael Jordan was No. 1 in the poll from 1993-2005, and then again last year. It's James' first time atop the rankings. The four-time NBA MVP began his career in Cleveland before signing with Miami in 2010. He reached four NBA Finals -- winning two -- before returning home last week.

Jordan finished second and was followed by Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, who is playing the final season of his legendary career. Jeter was No. 1 in 2011.

Rounding out the list is Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, Lakers forward Kobe Bryant, NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, golfer Tiger Woods, Saints quarterback Drew Brees and Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

As for female athletes, the rankings are as follows, from 1-10: Serena Williams, Danica Patrick, Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova, Mia Hamm, Lindsey Vonn, Billie Jean King, Alex Morgan, Chris Evert and Misty May.

According to Harris' website, 2,241 adults were surveyed online between June 11 and June 16.
