NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A suspect has been arrested and charged with attempting to rape a woman while brandishing a box cutter in the Bronx.

Jonathan Torres, 18, of the Bronx, was charged Friday with attempted rape, assault, criminal possession of a weapon, and menacing.

Around 2 a.m. this past Saturday, the suspect followed a young woman along East 149th Street down Jackson Avenue and St. Mary’s Park, in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx, police said.

The man brandished a box cutter before pulling on the woman’s shirt, throwing her to the ground, getting on top of her. The victim screamed for help and the suspect fled in an unknown direction, police said.

After being identified through a tip to the NYPD Crime Stoppers line, Torres was identified as a suspect and surrendered to police after they contacted him, police said.
