Did Kevin Mitchell Really Decapitate His Girlfriend's Cat? Strawberry Says Yes

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Speaking of stories that won't go away, Darryl Strawberry has given new life to an all-time unsettling tale involving one of his former teammates on the New York Mets.

On Tuesday, Strawberry said yep, he believes Kevin Mitchell decapitated his girlfriend's cat in a fit of rage.

"That's a pretty good story. I think it's pretty accurate," Strawberry said while promoting his new book on HuffPost Live. "Kevin Mitchell did do that. Kevin Mitchell, he's a different type of guy."

Mitchell has denied doing anything of the sort. The cat incident was alleged in Doc Gooden's first autobiography, "Heat," published in 1999.

In the book, Gooden wrote that he and card show promoter Meade Chassky were present when "Mitch took the knife to the cat, and cut its head off. Clean." There was no mention of Strawberry being in the room.

Strawberry said Mitchell was a "great guy, super teammate" and a "great person."

"He was affiliated with gangs quite a bit," Strawberry said. "I guess he figured that the girlfriend was acting a little crazy, so I'll kill her cat. ... He cut the cat's head off."

Mitchell, Strawberry and Gooden were teammates on the infamous -- and beloved --"Scum Bunch" Mets who won the World Series title in 1986.

"That's pretty normal with the kind of guys that we had in our locker room," Strawberry said.
