Bartolo Colon's Mother Dies At 63

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The mother of Mets pitcher Bartolo Colon has died at the age of 63.

Colon, 41, was scratched from his start against the Chicago Cubs on Monday to be with his family in the Dominican Republic.

Colon's mother, Adriana Colon, had been battling breast cancer. She died on Monday, CBS 2's Otis Livingston reported.

Manager Terry Collins said before Adriana Colon's death that her son could be placed on the bereavement list Tuesday.

Reliever Carlos Torres filled in for Colon on Monday. The Mets lost to the Cubs 4-1.

Daisuke Matsuzaka is a possible option to take Colon's next start. Out with elbow inflammation, Matsuzaka pitched six innings Saturday in a rehab start.

Torres faced two batters Sunday and pitched 1 1-3 innings of relief three days ago. He went 4 2-3 innings in relief July 4 and made nine starts last year.

Colon is 11-10 with a 3.85 ERA on the season. The Mets are looking for the series victory after taking two of the first three games of the set.
