Daughter Of 9/11 Victim Brings One-Woman Play To NYC

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The daughter of a 9/11 victim is bringing her one-woman play about her experiences to New York City.

East Brunswick native Sarah Van Auken was 12 years old when her father, who worked for the investment firm Cantor Fitzgerald, was killed in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The play, "This is Not About 9/11," is Van Auken's personal response to her dad's very public death.

"It's not about 9/11, but at the root of it all, maybe it is," Van Auken told WCBS 880's Peter Haskell.

In the play, Van Auken, now 25, talks not just about the loss of her father, but the lessons from that loss.

"I don't want to talk about my loss in the play so much as I want to talk about how it affected me," Van Auken said. "It influences virtually every decision I've ever made."

"It gave me the choice to either shrink or persevere, and what I am choosing is perseverance," Van Auken added.

The play opens at the Times Square Arts Center on Sept. 11 with three other shows that weekend.
