George Washington Bridge Bus Station Building Closing For Renovations

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) --Major upgrades are in store for the George Washington Bridge Bus Station, but the work will require the building to be closed for quite some time.

The George Washington Bridge Bus Station building will shut down Monday and stay closed for about a year. The facility is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The closure is part of a $183 million renovation project, the most significant since the terminal opened in 1963.

Buses will continue to arrive and depart from the Washington Heights facility, though bus loading and unloading platforms will be moved.

Ticket sales, restrooms and a waiting area will be available at a trailer nearby.

Despite the plans, riders were not too happy about how the renovation might impact their commutes.

"Oh I'm sure it will be a mess," one woman told 1010 WINS' Roger Stern.

"I had no idea, none," another woman said.

The passageway that leads to the 175th Street subway station will also close due to the renovations, Stern reported.

Straphangers will instead have to walk to 177th Street and Fort Washington Avenue.

According to the Port Authority, the new station will include a modern, fully enclosed passenger pavilion and reconfigured bus concourse. The pavilion will house a large waiting area, state-of-the art information systems and restrooms. It will offer a direct view of the George Washington Bridge on one side.
