NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Michael Sam is on the verge of having a new home.
According to multiple reports, the rookie defensive end will head to Dallas on Tuesday night to take a physical with the Cowboys on Wednesday.
If he passes the physical, he will reportedly join Dallas’ practice squad.
“I don’t want to talk about available players,” Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones told KRLD-FM on Tuesday morning when asked about the possibility of signing Sam. “Not necessarily a player, but just available players. It’s not good strategy. We’ve got competition out here. We’ve got a lot of reasons for not talking about maybes.”
Sam became the first openly gay man to be drafted by an NFL team when he was selected in the seventh round by the St. Louis Rams in May’s draft.
He was cut by St. Louis this past weekend, and was not added to the team’s practice squad after clearing waivers.
“It was a football decision and it was no different than any other decision that we make,” Rams head coach Jeff Fisher said after Sam was let go. “It was a football decision back in May to draft Mike. And once again, it’s been all about football. I will tell you this: I was pulling for Mike. I really was. I don’t say that very often, but Mike came in here and did everything that we asked him to do.”
The Cowboys are expected to be terrible defensively after releasing DeMarcus Ware and losing Jason Hatcher to free agency. Sean Lee is also out for the season after tearing his ACL for the third time in his career.
