AP Source: Browns' Josh Gordon Plans To Work For Car Dealership
BEREA, Ohio (CBSNewYork/AP) — How's this for a second career?
A person familiar with Josh Gordon's plans says the Browns' suspended Pro Bowl wide receiver will work for a car dealership while serving his NFL punishment.
Gordon was suspended for another violation of the league's substance abuse policy last week, a banishment that will deprive the Browns of their top playmaker this season. In the interim, he intends to work for the dealership, said the person who spoke Thursday to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.
Last week, arbitrator Harold Henderson upheld the league's ruling to suspend Gordon, who led the league with 1,646 yards receiving last season despite being suspended for two games and playing with three quarterbacks.
While he's out, Gordon is not permitted to practice or attend team meetings. The league said his eligibility for reinstatement will be determined after the 2014 season.
Browns coach Mike Pettine was asked about Gordon working for the dealership. He was reluctant to discuss the 23-year-old's future.
"We're not allowed to have contact with him," Pettine said. "We're just finding that out as well. That's something I don't really want to get into because I want to discuss the guys that are here. We want what's best for him. We just hope for that to occur."
ESPN first reported Gordon's plans to work for Sarchione Auto Group. A Sarchione spokeswoman would not confirm Gordon's hiring, saying there would be more information in coming days.
Gordon had hoped to play for Calgary in the Canadian Football League during his suspension. However, the CFL prohibits any suspended player under contract in the NFL from playing.
It's possible Gordon could still pursue legal action against the league to allow him to play somewhere. His personal belongings remain in his locker at Cleveland's facility.
