State Troopers Help Deliver Baby On Garden State Parkway

WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Two state troopers helped a Lakewood couple deliver a baby on the side of the Garden State Parkway.

The woman went into labor Wednesday night and her husband was driving her to the hospital Thursday morning when it became apparent the baby would not wait, police said. The couple pulled over on the parkway in Wall and called 911.

The troopers arrived to find the baby boy had just been delivered.

Trooper Yenier Hurtado removed his uniform shirt and wrapped the boy in it, state police said. Hurtado cut the umbilical cord after paramedics arrived and carried the baby to an ambulance.

State police said the mother and child are doing well at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch.

The couple requested their names remain private.
