Jets' Revamped Secondary Debuts On Sunday Against Raiders

By Tyson Rauch

One of the biggest stories heading into Sunday's game is the starting lineup in the New York Jets defensive backfield, as it has been modified due to injuries and roster decisions. The Jets secondary will be without Dee Milliner (ankle), Dexter McDougle (injured reserve), and Dimitri Patterson (released from the team), which eliminates at least two potential starters from Rex Ryan's first string defense. In an effort to remedy the situation, Ryan tried several pairings throughout the preseason and finally came up with the starting duo of Antonio Allen and Darrin Walls at cornerback, along with Calvin Pryor and Dawan Landry at the safety positions.

Allen Island?

Heading into training camp Antonio Allen figured to be one of the starting safeties for New York's defense, playing next to rookie Calvin Pryor. Now, after the aforementioned issues, Allen will be making his first start at cornerback on Sunday as Rex Ryan tries to maximize Antonio's athletic ability and football instincts. Look for the Oakland Raiders to test Antonio Allen early and often to see how the third-year player from South Carolina reacts to the bright lights of game action.

Pryor debuts

New York Jets first round pick Calvin Pryor will make his highly anticipated debut on Sunday against the Raiders.  Pryor is a big hitting safety that has a chance to bring an enforcer mentality to the Jets secondary.  As with Allen, look for Oakland to test Pryor with vertical routes that will challenge his communication skills and ability to identify offensive schemes.

Can Darrin deliver?

Darrin Walls is a quality defensive back that continues to improve under Rex Ryan and defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman. Walls has solid coverage skills, but struggles securing interceptions. If the fourth-year cornerback from Notre Dame can improve his ball skills he could secure a starting position for the remainder of the season.

Team effort

While the spotlight will shine bright on the changes on the secondary, it will take a total team effort for a standout defensive performance. The New York Jets front seven must generate a significant pass rush and stop the running game. The Jets offense must put together a quality scoring drives and win the battles of field position.  If these pieces fall together the New York Jets should walk away victorious on Sunday.
