As CBS 2's Matt Kozar reported, several people jumped in the water to help the 6-year-old, but the 40-year-old man went missing.

The boy was safely pulled from the water shortly before 7 p.m., Detective Patrick McCormick said.

NYPD divers assisted Yonkers police in pulling the man from the water and attempting to revive him. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The drowning occurred during a large community cookout. An eye-witness described a frightening scene.

"We turned around, we seen another guy go down. I was screaming, telling them, please get the guy who's drowning, but nobody could get to him," the woman said.

As CBS 2's Kozar reported, police are not sure how the boy ended up in the water.
