Mobile Exhibit Brings Story Of Sept. 11 Terror Attacks Across Nation

BREWSTER, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- If you can't make it to New York City to see the Sept. 11 memorial museum, it can now come to you.

A mobile exhibit is making rounds and is now in Brewster, New York.

The tractor-trailer truck rolled in off the interstate with a motorcycle escort and a crowd of more than 1,000 students waved and cheered, CBS 2's Lou Young reported.

The moving exhibition has been on the road since Sept. 11, 2012, bringing the story of the terror attacks to all parts of the country.

"We say we're never going to forget, but the reality is we're destined to forget unless we teach them what happened that day," said John Hodge, with the Stephen Filler Foundation. "And their lives are going to be affected, for sure, for the rest of their lives on something that happened maybe before they were even born at this point."

The truck is funded by the Stephen Siller Foundation. Siller was one of the hero firefighters who died on Sept. 11. His sacrifice is commemorated in an annual run through the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel and now in the exhibit as well, Young reported.

On Sept. 11 this year, the mobile exhibit was in Grand Rapids, Mich. The driver told Young he gets around.

"I've been from coast to coast and border to border," he said.

The stop in Brewster is the first time the exhibit is part of official school curriculum. The exhibit opens to the public Monday night, and especially for Brewster public school students.

A seventh grader waited with his grandmother, who said it was important for him to understand the meaning of the day.

"He needs to know this story," she said. "(We're worried about forgetting, aren't we?) Yea, I'm very worried."

On continuous tour the stop in Brewster about 60 miles from town is about as close to New York City as it will get for a while.

The mobile display will be in the parking lot of Brewster High School through Thursday before heading to Columbia, South Carolina next week.
