FBI: Pennsylvania State Trooper Shooting Suspect Has Ties To NY, NJ

SCRANTON, Pa.(CBSNewYork/AP) -- A survivalist suspected of killing a Pennsylvania state police trooper has ties to New York and New Jersey, according to the FBI.

Eric Frein, 31, was added Thursday to the FBI's 10 most wanted list. A total of $175,000 in reward money is being offered for information leading to his arrest.

"We have now made the world where he could hide a very, very small place,'' said Edward Hanko, special agent in charge of the FBI's Philadelphia office.

As of 8:30 p.m., Pennsylvania State Police asked residents of the Price and Barrett townships in Monroe County to stay inside due to police activity, and asked the public not to travel to the area.

Police offered no further information.

Police earlier said they are eliminating possible hiding places for Frein, including hunting cabins, campsites and other occasional residences in the Pocono Mountains.

An intense late-night search Thursday concentrated on the area around Frein's parents' home, with roads blocked and residents kept from their homes temporarily.

Frein is charged with killing Cpl. Bryon Dickson, 38, and wounding Trooper Alex Douglass in a late-night ambush outside the Blooming Grove barracks a week ago.

As many as 200 law enforcement officers at a time have been casting a wide net around the crime scene, exploring rugged terrain so impenetrable in spots that police choppers can't see through the forest canopy.

State police have warned the public that Frein, of Canadensis, Pa., is considered armed and extremely dangerous calling him an anti-law enforcement survivalist who has talked about committing mass murder.

According to the FBI, Frein is known to be a heavy smoker and a weapons enthusiast. He claims to have fought with Serbians in Africa and he has studied Russian and Serbian languages, the FBI said.

Frein is 165 pounds, 6'1″ with blue eyes and brown hair. Authorities said he may have shaved his head on both sides and have long hair on top.

The FBI said he was last seen wearing a brown and gold windbreaker, khaki shorts and sneakers and was carrying a dark green backpack with black trim.

New York State Crime Stoppers is also pitching in to help solicit information on Frein's whereabouts.

Anyone with any information is urged to call the Pennsylvania State Police Tips Line at 1-866-326-7256 or Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers at 1-800-472-8477.

Anyone calling the New York State Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-866-313-8477 with information will be immediately referred to those numbers. For more information, you can also click here.
