City Council Chair Praises Farina On Gay-Friendly Education Initiatives

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Since taking over as schools chancellor in January, Carmen Farina has worked to make city education more gay-friendly, but some advocates say more still needs to be done.

As WCBS 880's Alex Silverman reported, City Council Education Chair Danny Dromm said Farina is on the right track after rolling out guidelines for handling transgender issues and introducing LGBT history into the curriculum.

"You know the president himself mentioned Seneca, Selma and Stonewall. Some students might know about Seneca and Selma, but very few know about Stonewall," Dromm said.

But the lawmaker bristled at a public meeting with parents and educators earlier this week in the West Village when an education department official mentioned training guidance counselors.

"We're not sick," he said.

Dromm added that the whole school experience needs to be supportive.

"We need people standing up on the mountain tops, we need people at the principals office saying gay is great," he said, adding that there should be a gay pride celebration in every school.
