Crowds Flock To New Jersey Gas Stations As Prices Drop

EDISON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Low gas prices drew big crowds at service stations in New Jersey Saturday.

As WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported, one Costco in Edison, New Jersey was selling a gallon of regular gas for $2.89.

Lines for gas at the Costco on Route 27 stretched at least a half dozen deep by a half dozen wide.

"I'm not complaining," one driver said. "I'm not complaining at all."

Bruce from New Brunswick could not remember the last time he saw gas prices so cheap.

"What -- five years ago; nine years ago?" he said.

The savings were already burning a hole in a woman named Judith's pocket. She said she planned to spend the money she saved on something other than gas and "have some fun, finally."

Other cheap deals were seen elsewhere around New Jersey. At an Exxon in Rahway, regular was being sold for $2.91, across the street on St. Georges Avenue it was available for $2.93 on Friday.

"Excellent. I love it, I love it. It was $2.95 yesterday and $2.93 across the street," Aleice Jeter told CBS 2's Christine Sloan.

Oil industry analysts credited the price drop to the end-of-summer driving season and the changeover to cheaper winter blends of gas.

In New York, the average price is about $3.64 a gallon for regular. If you're driving a car with a 12-gallon tank, it will cost more than $43 to fill up; but in New Jersey, the total would be around $34, resulting in a savings of about $9 at the pump.

As cheap as prices in New Jersey are right now, experts say prepare for them to be back up in 2015.
